We provided quantity surveying services for the alterations and additions to this intermediate paediatric care facility in Montana, Cape Town, home to 150 of society’s most vulnerable children since the Pallottine Sisters founded the facility in the 1950s. The project reworked wards originally built to separate children by race under apartheid, replacing that spatial paradigm with therapeutic spaces, parent and child meeting areas, and reconnected courtyards at the heart of the complex. It also involved reusing, repairing, and shifting existing electrical and water systems throughout the facility, a complex exercise that left the Home with an efficient, robust environment without disrupting ongoing care.
As Professional Quantity Surveyors, our role involved cost control and management of the overall project. The project went on to receive a Cape Institute Commendation Award for Architecture in 2017, recognition of a transformation made possible by a donation that grew from R7 million to R40 million once carer wellbeing was placed at the centre of the brief.
